Three Frigates

The story of the three South African Type 12 frigates named after South African Presidents — SAS President Kruger, SAS President Steyn, and SAS President Pretorius — from initial design selection in the mid-1950s to their disposal in the early 1980s. The author draws on official papers, Reports of Proceedings, and first-hand anecdotes from those who served aboard to produce a book that documents not only the story of the ships but the South African Navy during their service: a period spanning the Simonstown Agreement, South Africa's increasing international isolation, and the Navy's operational deployments on the Cape Sea Route.
